Personal Note from Donna Ball Autrey daughter of Alice M. Ball Olsen, and Sept Daughter of George Email Olsen.
George Emil Olsen had never been married before.  He married my mother at age of sixty. She was a Widow of one year when George showed up one day at her little Farm in Junction City, Trinity County, California. She was still greaving over the loss of her first husband of 42 years (Les Ball).  George and Alice were married 1966.  He was a very industrious person.  A good farmer and loved to work with his hands he did not like to read but love to make things. This was a twenty year marriage. George passed away in 1989."

"NEWSPAPER ARTICLE OF 25 JULY 1990 IN THE TRINITY JOURNAL
BY PHIL NELSON ENTITLED DOWNRIVER

"DOWNRIVER" BY PHIL NELSON 25 JULY 1990.
"I first5 met Alice  back in 1977. I had just moved up to Trinity County and a neighbor asked if I would be willing to help him milk a couple of cows for the Olsens downriver.  It seems that George Olsen of Junction City had broken his leg and was bedridden. I said sure.  (George broke his leg kicking the cow)
Now it had been a long, long time since I had milked a cow and even then I never could get the hang of it.  There's nothing to milking a cow using a milking machine but when it came time to strip the critter by hand Ill be darned if I could get any milk to come out.  That's when I met Alice.
Alice was a lender white haired lady of 70 who proceeded to show me how it was done.  It took a while but I eventually was able to get milk from those cows.  After straining an putting the milk in the cooler I was invited in for coffee where I met George.
It soon became a routine: after milking we would sit at the kitchen table drinking coffee and talking.  Alice would usually get up and busy herself in the kitchen leaving George to continue our conversation. Sometimes I would stay and have breakfast.

Alice May Ball Olsen is originally from Salt Lake City, Actually she lived a mile from the streetcar line out in the "boonies"  They lived next to the railroad tracks and that's where she met her first husband, Leslie Ball.
Leslie and his friend were walking down the tracks past Alice's house.  Alice's step sister, who was a " little bit forward," according to Alice, called Leslie and his friend over to the front gate and made a date to meet at the schoolhouse.
The schoolhouse was located across the track from Leslie's home which was a mile down the track from Alice's house.  Alice was 14 at the time and refused to go.
Well, Leslie didn't give up. He phoned Alice and started coming over and the two started dating. A year later, 1922, Alice was 15 and Leslie 18, they were married. A year after the wedding they moved to California.  Leslie went to California a couple of months ahead of Alice to find a job.  Then while Alice worked for the Creamery Leslie went to Barber College, Leslie then in turn, worked at several Barber Shops putting Alice through Beauty School.  In 1930 they moved to Oxnard where Leslie opened up a barber shop in 1937 of his own after working for Mr. Winters OK Barber Shop. Alice then opened up her own Beauty Shop (Alice May Beauty Room).
When Alice was working for the telephone company in Oxnard she worked with and was a friend with Lottie Morgan, who later moved to Junction City and whose husband was a justice court judge for Junction City.
Leslie and Alice would visit the Morgans and it wasn't long before they bought their place in Junction City.  It was 1950 and they bought 42 acres on Dutch Creek Road.  It was to be their vacation home only. "But Leslie wanted to move up so bad", says Alice.  So in 1955 Leslie and Alice sold their businesses and home in Oxnard and moved to Junction City.
"I hated it that first year," says Alice, " I had a large beautiful home in Oxnard and our house here was just a shell."
Alice continues, "We had to hand pump and bucket water from the spring: no electricity: there were no conveniences, I was used to the city."  After the first year of Leslie "just hunting and fishing", he went to work for Dean Davenport's barber shop in Weaverville. (The hop was located in what is now the Gold Rush Jewelry store.) Alice opened her beauty shop in their home in Junction City also a year after moving up to Junction City.
And that's the way it was for the next eight years.  One year Leslie became ill and after a year of sickness, in 1965, passed away from Cancer.
Well, Alice put the place up for sale and one day a man came to the door to inquire about buying the place.  His name was George Olsen.
"I couldn't get rid of him," Alice said George, a 60 year old bachelor who had never been married, started hanging around.
George, who in his heyday was an Oakland Bay Bridge painter who hung 500 feet in the air above the Bay in a boatswains chair; a high rise riveter and a farmer in Montana, was retired and living in Alameda. But not for long.  He started coming up and visiting Alice quite often and on June 29, 1966 George and Alice were married.
It was with George that the place became a mini-farm.  They put in a large garden,
built out buildings and bought two cows - Alice's first experience with a cow.
"It was a pleasant experience," says Alice, "I taught myself to milk and with George's help learned to make cheese and butter."  They also grew vegetable for the senior citizens through the Green Thumb Program.
Over the years my visits with the Olsens became less frequent.  One year I photographed Alice in their huge garden for the newspaper but generally we only saw one another picking up our mail at the post office where we would stop and chat for a while.
George became more stooped as the years passed but Alice never seemed to grow older. In July 1989 George's heart stopped and he passed away.  He was 83.
Again the property was put on the market for sale and this July Alice moved to Weaverville. "Its a smaller and easier place to take care of, "said Alice
At 83 Alice still belongs to the North Fork Grange.  She is very active in the Canasta club that years ago started with ladies and now has 12. "I'm the only old timer lift," Alice said.  Only this last year Alice didn't renew her beauticians license.

I drive by George and Alice's old place just about every day to and from town.  There used to be a sign at the entrance to their driveway that said, "The Olsens, George and Alice."  (Before that the sign use to read "The Balls Breezeway")  The signs are down now and I feel a little sad for the change.  That's the way it goes, I guess, nothing ever stays the same.  So, welcome to the new people and Alice May Ball Olsen.  I hope to see you around."."

Lineage through her Father Leslie W. Ball and Grandfather Elmer Ellsworth Ball

James Melvern Ball was the Eleventh son of James R. Ball and Elizabeth Owen Ball.  James M. was born 17 September 1831 in a little town of Freedom, Cattaragus County, New York State.  There were six brothers besides him and five sisters.

A History of the Township of Freedom in Cattaragus County, New York. 1879 Book974.7943 E25 Found at the BYU Genealogy Library in Provo, Utah.
The Town of Freedom is the northeast corner in the county.  The surface is a rolling or moderately hilly upland.  Its principal watercourses are Clear Creek, which takes its rise from Fish Lake and flows northwest through the central part, and the south branch of Cattaragus Creek, which flows in the same direction across the southwest corner.  Fish Lake in the east part, Beaver Lake in the south, and Scum and Laws Lakes in the center, are small bodies of water.  The soil is of good quality, of clay and gravelly loam, well adapted to grazing, dairying, fruit-culture, and all other pursuits of agriculture.  .  The town contains a total area of 25,998 acres, of which 18,125 acres are improved, and in 1875 had a population of 1341 inhabitants.  In 1835 a lot of believers in the Mormon Faith migrated from this vicinity to Kirkland, Ohio with that Faith.
Previous to 1825 the following-named settlers were here and located as follows: David Austin, David Alton and Elliott Alton, on lot 1, the third range.
JAMES R. AND EDWARD BALL, ON LOT 7, THIRD RANGE; (James R. is the Father of James M. Ball ) Edward Ball would be the brother to James R. Ball)
The Balls were located here in the State Census of 1835, and on a   Land Record of purchase in Freedom, NY showing James R. Alvin and Edward.
1835 NY State census shows James R: Alvin: and Edward of Freedom. Cattaragus Co., NY.”
1840 Census shows James R. Ball with his family living in Freedom, Cattaragus County, New York.  This census is very hard to read but shows the best I can make out as 2 male children between 5 and 10 years; l male child between 10 and 15 years: 1 male child between 15 and 20: l male between 50-60; 1 female 10-15 years; 1 female 15-20 years and l female 40-50.  This is a guess as no names are listed in this Census Year of 1840.  They were still here at this time.  They were shown as Farmers.

In 1850 the Balls migrated to Dupage Township, Winfield County, Illinois and purchased land to farm.  James M. Ball and is Brother Silas S. Ball both close in age show up on this census working as a farmers. James was 19 and Silas was 17.  They were on their own.
In 1855 James met his wife Julia E. Noe somewhere in Illinois. I am not sure but they were living in Dupage, Illinois in 1850 cannot locate her father on this date until 1855 whey Cyrenus Noe Julia’s father signed the marriage application for her to marry James M. Ball in Princeton, Bureau County, Illinois. On 8 March 1855.
In 1860 both families where living in the Town of Rochester in Sangamon County, Illinois, just outside Springfield.  Cyrenus was listed as a Phy6sician and had three more children besides Julia. John C. 1844 New York: Alice J. 1853, Illinois; Milton H. 1859, Rochester, Illinois.

James secured a good job with the Union Pacific Rail Road as a Foreman in Galesburg, Illinois.  While he and Julia where living there a lot of there children where born.  My grandfather Elmer Ellsworth Ball was born in 1862.   James was then sent to Omaha in 1869 to supervise Railroad Shops.   He resigned in 1870 and they all moved to Sarpy County.  The County records show that James owned section 33, in Plattford Township. One Hundred Twenty Acres of land.  He purchased it in 1870 and the land had an estimated value for the period of $50.00 per acre.

When the Balls arrived in Sarpy County from Illinois, the Nebraska land had just been opened to settlers and all they could see surrounding them were Indians thus they called James M. (Timber Jim) and James R. Ball cousin through Alvin Ball (Brother to James M.)  (Prairie Jim).

James M. and Julia are both buried at the Ball Cemetery in Springfield, Sarpy County, Nebraska.  The Ball Cemetery sets on a bluff overlooking the Platt River on land that once belonged to James R. Ball a cousin to James M. Ball.  The cemetery is filled with large cedar trees and has a large cement archway over the entrance entitled “The Ball Cemetery”.

The inscriptions on the head stones read: James M. Ball Born Sept. 17, 1830, died March 20, 1903.  Julia Ball Wife of James M. Born Jan 25, 1839 died Aug 13, 1907."

Obituary for James M. Ball . "Obituary for my Great Grandfather James M. Ball;

! After suffering from many ailments for a long time the venerable James M. Ball succumbed Monday morning to a stroke of parpalysis which affected him Saturday.  Mr. Ball had been in poor health for some time and on account of his advanced age was hardly expected to make a permanent recovery.  Deceased was born in the state of New York, September 17, 1831.  While yet a young man he located in DuPage county Ill., and on March 8, 1855 he was married to Miss Julia Noe at Princeton, Ill.  The family moved to Galesburg. Where Mr. Ball's proficiency in mechanical work secured for him the position of foreman of the Union Pacific shop at that place.  In 1869 he was sent by the company to take charge of the shops at Omaha and resigned in 187) to take up his residence on a farm in Sarpy county.  He made his home on the old farm in Plattford precinct from that time until about 10 years ago when he moved with his family to Springfield where he remained the balance of his life.
! Surviving him are his wife, ten sons and two daughters, and a brother SILAS S.BALL AND a sister who reside in California.     Mr. Ball was a gentleman who had the respect and esteem of every acquaintance.  His record during the thirty years, which he spent in this community, is one that any man might envy.  Since 1888 he had been a member of the Methodist church.  Burial is being delayed until the arrival of a daughter from Texas.  The funeral will be held at the Methodist Church Saturday morning at 10 o'clock with interment in the Ball cemetery.  The sympathy of the community is with the bereaved family."

"Obituary Taken from the Springfield Monitor August 22, 1907 Page 3 Column 3.
"While sitting at the supper table Monday evening laughing and chatting with members of the family, Mrs. J. M. Ball suddenly straightened up in her chair and died without a word or groan, her heart having failed.  Mrs. Ball's friends had noted a gradual decline in her health for a year or two, but otherwise she had been remarkably well and helped prepare the meal, which was to be her last.     Julia E. Noe was born January 25, 1839, and at the age of fifteen was united in marriage to James M. Ball at Galesburg, Ill.  She was the mother of twelve children and ten of them survive her.  They are Alfred and James of Fremont, Elmer and Sam of Louisville, Ben, Ace, John and Lester Ball, Mrs. E. C. Armstrong and Mrs. George Stuart of Springfield, all whom were present at the funeral.  The deceased came to Sarpy county with her husband in 1869 and for fifteen years had made her home in Springfield.  The funeral services were held from the Methodist Church at 11 o’clock yesterday.  Rev. Illsley officiated."

Notes to the above Obituary: Julia E. Noe was born in New Jersey:  She was united in marriage to her husband James M. Ball at an early age of 16 or 15.  Her Marriage Certificate in my possession says she was married in Princeton, Bureau County, Illinois. 8 March 1855 and permission to marry signed by her father Cyrenus E. Noe.  James and Julia probably eventually moved to Galesburg, IL at a later date as some of her children were born there.  But they also lived in Rochester, Sangamon County, IL on the 1860 Census /s/ Donna L.
