BLACK HAWK WAR
In May of 1832 Sac and Fox Indians under the leadership of Black Hawk left the Iowa territory and returned to their homes across the Mississippi River in northern Illinois. These Native Americans had lost their Illinois lands in a disputed treaty signed in St. Louis in 1804. Their return to northern Illinois sparked widespread panic among white settlers, and Illinois Governor Reynolds quickly called up the militia, which included a young Abraham Lincoln.
Both the militia and regular army troops proved unable to locate the elusive Indians at first, but by July they had begun to pursue Black Hawk's band across northern Illinois and southwestern Wisconsin, engaging them in a major conflict at Wisconsin Heights before finally routing the Indians at Bad Axe on the Mississippi River."

Sarah Sally RENFRO

1THE RENFRO'S IN AMERICA;Researched done by a Professional Geneologist, History for Sarah "Sally" Renfro, Compiled by Leatrice Armstrong and then Donna L. Autrey. "THE RENFRO'S IN AMERICA;Researched done by a Professional Geneologist: Complied by Leatrice Armstrong Behnk: and then complied by Donna L. Autrey of Redding, California (Web SitEmail autrey@c-zone.net

Our RENFRO line comes through our Armstrong line, my great-great grandmother's maiden name was Sarah “Sally” RENFRO, she was the daughter of Joshua RENFRO and Feraby Reavis, and she married David Armstrong whose Daughter was Margaret Elizabeth Armstrong (Great Great Grandmother of Donna L. Autrey) who had a Daughter  Mary Alice Wilson ( Who was the Grandmother of me) Donna L. Autrey

Firstly RENFRO is Scottish, definitely, and they have been in the U.S. for many, many years, and a part of the history that made our coutry.  The RENFRO were always on the front moving west, and fighting the Indians (possibly marrying into their tribes too, but there is no proof of that). The name is spelled many ways over the years, though from the same line many times, the records sometimes say Renfre-Rentfro-Renfrce, and Renfro among others.    Our Reavis line had their name misspelled many times also.  The first record of any spelling of this name is a Simon Renfre in 1620, though there is no connection of our line as we know it now.  There is a Refrewshire, Scotland, perhaps this is where they originated from,  no proof of this though.

Our James Rentfro the first (Senior) would seem to be son of William, and that William the son of John, different researchers disagree on but ONE THING  and that is whether the last named William is son of John Rentfro or Joseph Rentfro.  Be that as it will, the Renfro clan originated in Virginia as did our Reavis line.

A William Renfro, who was the son of John, was at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, which was the last battle of the Rev. War.    My Renfro Researcher believe this is the father of our James Renfro, and James had brothers,  John, and a brother Moses, and possibly others.

In doing a bit of research in my encyclopedia to find out a little more history, I find in the history of Tennesee the following,  In 1779, two different groups of pioneers, one led by James Robinson, and one led by John Donnellson pushed far into the wilds and settled around the Big Salt Lake on the Cumberland River and built Fort Nashborough (now Nashville)  which formed the center of the middle Tenn. Settlement.  These pioneers drew up an agreement called the Cumberland compact, it established representative government for the settlers and created a court system to enforce the province.  A Fort Donnelson was located on the Cumberland river ( This is from The World Book Encyclopedia).

The above is copied to better understand the below records that include our Renfro's.  Donnelsons party set out to explore the unknown Cumberland Gap, they lived on the flat boats on the forks of the Red River and the Cumberland River.  There was a great massacre here after they had set up their settlements on the river, and it was our James who upon returning to the settlement found the results of the massacre, which included many Renfro's and other relatives, including James brother of the Reverend Moses Renfro.

At the time of the expedition into the Cumberland Gap, there was no such state as Tennessee.  It was the part of N.C.    President Andrew Jackson married Donnelsons."
