This is early November of 2008.  I have reached a point where I feel like it is time for
Me to write down what I know about David and Orpha Armstrong and their children.

David Alonzo Armstrong was born Oct. 26, 1859, in Putnam Co., MO, to David and Sarah Renfro Armstrong.  He was the tenth and last child born to them.  Orpha Janette Messersmith was born Nov. 20, 1862, in Putnam Co., MO, to Thomas and Angeline Henness Messersmith.  Orpha and David probably knew each other as children.  David’s older brother was Joshua Armstrong and he married Jennett Henness and Jennett was a sister to Angeline, so when Orpha married David her Aunt Jennett became her sister in law.  The families tended to migrate to the same areas and  Joshua moved on to Monroe Co., Iowa, where his first children were born and I see Thomas and Angeline and their family in that county on the 1870 census.  Joshua had moved on to Nebraska in 1865.  His father, David, had moved from Putnam Co., MO, to Wayne Co., Iowa, and in April of 1865 he is settling in Sarpy Co., NE.  It seems as if he brought his married children along with him and while David settled in Sarpy Co., three of his married children, Joshua, William and Louisa Adeline and husband James Ferguson settled in the South Bend area in next door Cass Co.  David and Orpha were married Jan. 1, 1881, in Sarpy Co.  The marriage was performed by Joshua, an RLDS preacher as well as a farmer.  The bride and groom’s fathers were the witnesses and the marriage took place in the home of the bride’s parents.  In the obituary of Thomas Messersmith it says that he lived for a time in Sarpy Co., near South Bend.  Since the Platte River separates Sarpy and Cass, I assume that the families lived on opposite sides of the river.  In the early days there was a ferry in that vicinity before the bridges were built.  By 1885, Joshua and family have moved on to Otoe Co., NE, and are in the Nebraska City area.  Again in Thomas obituary it says that he homesteaded in Frontier Co., NE, in 1884.  He stayed there till the end of his days which occurred in 1923, and Joshua moved on to Cass and Dekalb Co.’s. MO, where he died in 1907.  After their marriage David and Orpha were probably in Sarpy Co., for awhile.  I feel like perhaps a few years even.  David and Orpha were never too far away from Joshua and Jennett for too long, it seems.  I am not sure where David and Orpha are on the 1885 Nebraska state census.  I do believe that they spent some time in Hitchcock Co., NE.  David had a sister, Margaret Palmer, there, and Frontier Co., is very close by.  An article in in the Feb. 10th, 1888, Trenton Torpedo, states.
“We have the pleasure of reporting a brand new girl baby in the home of David Armstrong.  David will undoubtedly go to wearing box toed shoes in a few years in order to have any rest from bachelor callers.”
Surely, David and Orpha were living there at the time.  I suspect that they were well known.  There is another article in a Trenton paper in Dec. of 1890, saying that David Armstrong arrived from Sarpy Co, Tuesday morning and will spend a few days visiting relatives and friends.  I do not see the Armstrong children in the Sarpy County School Extant of 1892.  When David’s older brother Hugh died in June of 1899, David is reported as being in Syracuse, which is in Otoe Co.  Hugh, was my great grandfather.  Then we see David and family in Raymore, Cass Co., Mo, in 1900, yet in May of 1912 the Springfield Monitor says that Dave Armstrong is coming from the southern part of  the state arrived Tuesday to be present at the funeral of his brother, Aaron Armstrong.  1910 and 20 find the Armstrongs near Warrensburg in Johnson Co., MO.  Another brother, William, died in April of 1927, and they have David back in Springfield, NE.  He may have been for awhile, but I feel that he spent from 1900 on mostly in MO.  In time,  Orpha and David and some of their children became RLDS members.  The Community of Christ gave me quite a bit of information on David and Joshua’s families.  David and Orpha were baptized Nov. 5th, 1893, at Nebraska City in Otoe Co.  Knowing that submersion is the accepted way of baptizing here and knowing that it was usually done in a lake or in this case probably the Missouri River, I wonder if it was a warm beautiful Nov. day.  Perhaps they had other arrangements.  Joshua did the baptizing.  When David Sr. died he left a will and there is a long list of people that owed David, the father, money, and David, the son, is one of them.  Senior held a chattel mortgage for nine hundred and fifty dollars.  I need to check and see where he might have bought a farm.  Orpha died March 28, 1916, and a small obit was printed in The Weekly Standard Herald, the day  being Friday, March 31, 1916, Warrensburg, MO.
“Mrs. David Armstrong died Tuesday morning of this week at the family home three miles south of the city.  Pneumonia was the cause of her death and she had been ill, but a few days.  The deceased was a native of  Missouri, having been born in Putnam County, this state, in Nov., 1862.  In 1881 she was married to David A, Armstrong.  To Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong were born, Lloyd of Warrensburg, George P. of  Omaha, Nebr., Guy W. of Brazil, Ind., Mrs. Lewis Warnick of Warrensburg, Mrs. E. C. Nelson of  Wichita, Kansas, and Mrs. Ann Baughman of Omaha, Nebr.  They moved to this vicinity twelve years ago.  The deceased was a good woman held in high esteem by her neighbors and those who knew her.   The many friends and family extend sympathy to the bereaved ones.”
David and Orpha have a common tombstone and are buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Warrensburg.  I have been there and taken a picture of the tombstone.  This obituary tells me that David and Orpha  probably came to Warrensburg in 1904 from Raymore.  David later married Mary A. Pittman in Warrensburg on March 22, 1917.  She was a widow with children, thirteen years his junior.  She is with him on the 1920 and 1930 census.  David is still coming back to Nebraska from time to time.  He came back to his daughter, Anna’s, funeral.  She died in 1918.  In the Springfield Monitor (Nebraska) paper dated Sept. 16, 1926, we see-Accompanied by a son from Omaha, David Armstrong visited relatives in Frontier County several days last week.  While there a nephew of his was killed with a haystacker while putting up hay.
In a letter written by an aging Jennett Armstrong to her sister in law, Mary Jane Schall, who was David’s oldest sister, Jennett replied to a question asked by Mary Jane as to the well being of  Dave.  Jennett said that Jesse’s husband had seen Dave and his wife at Berthas and that Dave had said he was thinking of having a sale, stock and all and leave the farm and was thinking about going into business with George.  Did he do it?  I don’t know.  It seems as if George was mostly doing police business, but something else could have been going on there.  On the 1930 census David and Mary A. are in Kansas City, Jackson Co., MO.  David died Feb. 13, 1945, at the home of his daughter, Esther.  The obituary is from the Daily Star Journal,  Feb. 14, 1945, Warrensburg, MO.
“PIONEER RESIDENT DIES-David Armstrong, who for many years lived south of  Warrensburg, died Tuesday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. C. Nelson, in
Wichita, Kansas.  He had been living in Kansas City recently.  He was past eighty years old.  The body will be brought here, a service to be held 2 o’clock Friday afternoon at
Sweeney Phillips Chapel.  Elder W. C. McCrae officiating.  Burial will be in Sunset Hills.
Mr. Armstrong had lived in or near Warrensburg since 1900.  His wife died in 1916 and he later married Mrs. Adah Pittman, who is left.  He also leaves four children, Mrs. Armstrong, Mrs. Bertha Warnick of Kansas City, Guy Armstrong of Detroit, Lloyd of Ottawa, Kansas, and George who lives in the west.  (Esther is not mentioned, but she would have been the fifth child.)
I am sure that there are many pictures of David, Orpha, and his family, but I haven’t seen them yet.  My sister, Leatrice Behnk, originally started doing genealogy back in the early eighties.  She said once that I made a good bird dog.  I should say that as of late I try to  find out what I can without looking at family information.  We started with birth dates and such and names of the children.  Leatrice used to subscribe to the Everton books and she would find people in there to contact.  In this case I believe she was in touch with a
Messersmith.  It seems like she talked to close kin of Lloyd Armstrong, but I can’t put my finger on where I actually saw it.  Leatrice obtained the obituary of David, Orpha, and Bertha’s husband, Lewis Warnick.  These obits came from Warrensburg and they also told her that David and Orpha had no stone in Sunset Hills, but they do. The only picture that I have of David was taken with his four brothers, William, John and Elza.  It was probably taken in 1912 when John and David came back to Sarpy for Aaron’s funeral.
The granddaughter of Elza brought me several good photocopies of it when she came to visit me from California years ago.  The name “Ace” is on the picture and the lady who gave it to me said that they called David by the nickname of Ace.  David seemed to be more then just a farmer.  As of yet I have not connected him to any business, but feel like he might have been into some type or other.

Some of my birth years may vary from what is out there, but I will try to explain why I picked that year.  As we all know, dates can vary widely, tombstones are wrong at times, obituaries also, and census!

Esther Ceila was the first child born to David and Orpah.  Someone in the family told Leatrice that she was born in 1881 and that would make sense as that would be about eleven months after the marriage.  The Community of Christ, which is based in Independence, MO, has on their record that Esther was born Nov. 25, 1882, in Sarpy Co., so therefore I put down 1882 instead of 1881.  They sent me photocopies of the original sheets as well as her index card showing locations.  Their information matches up so nicely that I decided to use 1882.  The first I saw of Esther was on the 1900 census of Nebraska City in Otoe Co.  She is in the home of Dr. D. W. Hershey and she is a servant and she is listed as Esten.  Esther married Edmund Charles Nelson June 4, 1902.  The marriage license was taken out in Cass Co., MO, but they were married in Nebraska City and the ceremony was performed by Uncle Joshua Armstrong.  Edmund was born Nov. 25th, 1875 in Eastport, Fremont Co., Iowa.  Did they have the same birthday?  Records say that they do.  In 1910 the Nelsons are in Oklahoma City and then in 1920 in Wichita,
Sedgewick Co., Kansas.  He owns a shoe repair shop.  I see one son, Paul, on both census.  In 1930 they are still in Wichita and Paul is not far away in his own home with a wife.  Paul was born ca 1904.  According to RLDS records, Edmund held the office of both deacon and priest in the church.  Also the records have Esther C. dying Sept. 26, 1953, and Edmund dying July 28, 1956.  They are, no doubt, buried in Wichita, Kansas.

Anna Pauline Elizabeth comes next.  She was born Jan. 6, 1883, in Nebraska.  I have her death certificate and have also been to visit her grave and the stone reads the same.  We were first aware of  Anna when I read in an old Springfield Monitor that Dave Armstrong was coming from Missouri to attend the funeral of his daughter, Anna Baughman.  We were given the name of Anna Elizabeth, but the stone says Anna Pauline and I also saw a card that her husband had given the information Anna P. E. Baughman.  The death certificate gives septic sore throat as the cause of death, contributing factor, fulimating septicimia.  I suspect that in simpler terms Anna died of the flu that was killing so many people back in 1918.  In 1900 she is still at home and for a long time I could not find her in 1910, but the other day I looked at an old 1910 Omaha City Directory and there is a Pauline Armstrong, waiter, listed.  She is living at 1510 Howard St.  I do see her to be husband, Thomas Albert Baughman, on the 1910 census and he is alone.  I suspect that they may have been married in late 1910, or possibly 1911.  Their first child was born in May of 1912.  I thought that since Anna’s brother, George, was in law enforcement in Omaha and Thomas was also, that perhaps they met that way.  Or Thomas may have just met her at the caf where she was working.  I have looked extensively for a marriage for Anna and Thomas in both Nebraska and Missouri and do not find it.  I wonder if Thomas was perhaps married before as I see him with his brother and a wife, Myrtle, on the 1900 census of Omaha.  There might have been a mistake and she was actually a sister.  It doesn’t matter.  Thomas was born April 10, 1879, in Maryland.  I see when he registered for the WWI draft he listed his mother, Alice Schlek, as living in Brunswick, NE.  That is where I was born and raised.  Thomas and Anna’s first daughter was born May 23, 1912.  They named her Evelyn.  She eventually married a Hammacher and died just a few years ago, July 25, 2006, last residence, Westminister, Adams Co., Co.  The next child was A.
Virginia and she was born Feb. 4, 1914 and married a Wulff.  Apparently she died in Omaha on Oct. 5, 2005.  Both were in their nineties.  After Anna died Thomas married Violet Kiser and on the 1930 census Thomas is a policeman at the city jail and they have his two girls plus four of their own.  When he died his obituary lists three more.  There is an obituary in the Omaha World Herald as well as a picture of Thomas Albert.  He was coming home from his shift, walking, and someone who had been to a dance and had too much to drink hit him and killed him.  This was February 2, 1941.  The article said that Thomas had joined the police force in 1910 and had served except for a seven year period between 1925 and 1932.  He was considered a mechanical genius and headed the police garage where he designed and built a police ambulance and first aid equipment.  He left a widow and nine children.  So Anna died Aug. 20, 1918, and Thomas died Feb. 2, 1941, and they are buried in West Lawn Cemetery in Omaha.  Next to the grave of  Thomas is a small son, Hugh Edward, that was born to Thomas and Violet.  He was born Jan. 5, 1922, and died Feb. 28, 1922.

George G. Armstrong, the third child born to David and Orpha, arrived Dec. 1, 1884.
Nebraska was the location.  My sister had him down as George W., but the WWI draft registration, his marriage license, and the 1920 census have the “G’ in there.  The 1920 census actually gives G. George.  He was baptized into the RLDS faith in 1900 in Raymore, MO.  The church records have that and nothing more on him.  In 1910 there is a George Armstrong working as a farm hand in Sedgewick Co., Kansas, and it fits.  We know that he came to Omaha, but he doesn’t seem to be there by 1910.  However, in the 1913 Omaha City Directory there is a George Armstrong that is a chauffer and he has a bed at 825 South 20th St.  When I checked for sister Anna’s husband, Thomas Baughman, I found that this was his residence so George was staying with Anna and Thomas.  George married in Omaha, Douglas Co.  The date was Aug. 31, 1915, and Carrie
Rathburn and George were both age thirty.  They were married in a Presbyterian Church, the minister was Robert Wheeler.  Her parents were Frank Rathburn and Nettie Hamilton.
On the WWI draft registration George lists his occupation as chauffer.  I have also seen him listed as a police chauffer at times.  On the 1920 census he is an auto mechanic in Omaha, and the 1930 census has him as a law officer.  The city directories have as a policeman or police work.  The last I find him in the Omaha City Directories is the year 1934.  He would have been fifty by then and he must have moved on.  As I mentioned before his father David talked about quitting the farm and going into business with George and that was 1920.  Why did his father’s obit say that George was in the West? Perhaps they did not know where he was for sure.  I have tried to find where George might have died, but have had no luck.  I looked beyond the year the family said he died, which was July 5, 1946.  I have found nothing so far.  I followed up leads and came to a dead end.  I think someone knows where he is buried and in time they will tell me.

I have found little on Guy W. Armstrong.  The family gave my sister May 20, 1887, as his birth date.  His middle name was Wilford, it seems, but on the WWI draft registration he gives his middle name as William.  Perhaps 1887 is the correct year, but I wondered if wasn’t 1886.  The 1900 census in Cass Co., MO, has him born May of 1886.  His draft registration gives the same.  The 1910 census gives his occupation as ball player for a Kansas City team.  He is Brazil, Ind., when his mother died in 1916.  He was probably married by then and when he registered for the draft he was in Detroit, MI.  He was a machinist.  They are still in Detroit in 1920 and he is in machine repair and by 1930 he is a teacher in a trade school.  I see no children in either George or Guy’s households.  Guy was still in Detroit when his father died in 1945.  Guy and his wife, Velma, should have been married about 1914 and I did look for a marriage license in Clay Co., Ind.  I found nothing, but perhaps I missed it.  Velma was born Velma L. Azbell in Ind.  Something will turn up sooner or later.  An aged correspondent of my sister that lived in the Raymore, MO, vicinity, told her that a year book that was put out in 1972 had the names of George and Guy and Elmer Armstrong in it.  The yearbook indicated that Elmer was still alive. He was the son of Joshua and Jennett Armstrong.  It also indicated that
George and Guy were both dead by the year 1972.  This old fellow called a very old woman, and she said that she remembered George and Guy, but not Elmer.  It seems to me that Guy should be on the Social Security Deaths, but I have not found him.  I followed a few leads to no avail.
As I said before I believe that David and Orpha were living in Hitchcock Co., NE, when Bertha Mae was born.  Her birth date is Feb. 2, 1888.  She is found with her parents in 1900 Cass Co., MO, and in 1910 she is twenty two and they are living in Johnson Co., MO.  She married Lewis W. Warnick on March 18, 1914, in Warrensburg, MO.  I found her marriage in a Warrensburg  paper, the date March 27, 1914.
“Lewis Warnick and Miss Bertha Armstrong were married March 18th, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McElroy of this city.  Rev. Baxter, the Cumberland Presbyterian minister officiated.  The bride is the accomplished daughter of David Armstrong living south of town.  The groom is a prosperous young farmer.  Their many friends extend congratulations and wish them a happy married life.”
According to other information along with his obituary, Lewis was born either June 17, 1892, or July 1892.  His obituary says July.  The WWI draft has him born in Knobnoster, MO.  He was a farmer at that time.  At the time of his death he was employed as a mechanic.  Lewis died August 10th, 1927.  Lewis and Bertha had two children, Wilma Jeannette and Lewis Jr.  From the records it looks as if Wilma was born July 28, 1920, and later married Robert Emmett Byrnes in Jackson Co., MO, on August 5th, 1950.  She died in Sept. of 1985, in Chilliclothe, Livingston Co., MO.  I see a Lewis W. Warnick in the Social Security deaths.  He was born Jan. 2, 1922, in MO and died Oct. 23, 1982 in Long Beach, CA.  This fits both children as in the 1927 article it gives the ages of Wilma as seven and Lewis as five.  Bertha never married again and apparently lived with her daughter in Chilliclothe, MO until she died.  The Social Security index has Bertha Warnick, born Feb. 2, 1888, in NE and died Feb 1968, in Chilliclothe, Livingston Co., MO.  Her body was brought back to Warrensburg and placed next to her husband.  I am assuming that this was also the Sunset Hills Cemetery, but the person who typed the obit of Lewis did not say which cemetery, just that they buried her Feb. 9, 1968.

Lloyd Thomas Armstrong was born in Nebr., Nov. 29, 1889.  This is per family and also the Social Security death index.  His marriage to Ethel L. Jones occurred in Johnson Co., MO, on July 29, 1914.  Lloyd was from Warrensburg, Ethel was from Sedalia, in Pettis Co., MO.  The 1920 census shows Lloyd and Ethel in Warrensburg.  In 1930 they are in Franklin, Franklin Co., Kansas.  I see no children, but I feel like there was once family somewhere, perhaps adopted?  Lloyd seemed to be a farmer.  The Social Security index has born Nov. 29, 1889, in NE, and died April of 1971, last known residence was Baldwin City in Douglas Co., Kansas.

I need to make a correction.  The church records were wrong and I should have caught it before.  Esther Celia had to have been born Nov. 25, 1881, instead of 1882.  I know that Anna’s birth year is no doubt correct and it is Jan. of 1883.  Too close.  1881 has to be the correct year.

I have enjoyed this.  I have tried to keep the errors to a minimum, but they do occur.

Deanna Kleider."
