The family consisted of August and Maria Agnes, with their 3 children, August ("Gus"), Frederica, and Caroline. I found her date of death: 23 May 1917 at www.ancestry. com under OneWorldTree and did an obit lookup. Springfield Monitor, Springfield, Nebraska, May 31, 1917 Mrs. W. D. Schaal After being confined to her bed for nearly six months with internal cancer, Mrs. W. D. Schaal passed to her reward at 9:45 last Wednesday evening. The funeral was held from the Plattford church at 11 A.M. Friday, Rev. L. W. Myers of the Christian church at Bethany, Nebraska., conducting the services. Burial was in the Ball cemetery. Miss Nora Saunders was born Apr. 23, 1871, in Shelby county, Missouri and came to Nebraska in 1877. She was united in marriage to Mr. William D. Schaal on April 14, 1887. From this union eight children were born, five of whom are living. They are: Mae, Myron, Wendel, Opal and Billy. Mrs. Schaal was a quiet home-loving woman, devoted to her family and loved and respected by her neighbors and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. The family has the sympathy of a large circle of friends in their sorrow. Source: "Sarpy County Cemeteries, Vol I-III", compiled by Gary Iske, Sarpy County."

1Springfield Monitor 27 April 1899, Obituary for Mabel Schaal. "Senator and Mrs. W.D. Schaal are mourning the death of their little daugher, Mabel, who passed away Tuesday at the age of three years and four months to a day.  Funeral services were held at the family residence conducted by Rev. S.J. Stewart. Interment in the Wilson cemetery.  The disease that took the little one away is peculiar and is rarely met with by practioners in general.  The child was first taken sick with bleeding at the nose on Sunday and when this was checked it later came from the eyes, mouth and bowels.  In fact nearly all over the body there were places where the blood seemed to have oozed out of the smaller vessels and gathered under the skin.

James Thomas FOSTER

1World Book, Texas Ranger James Thomas Foster. "Texas Ranger: James Thomas Foster was a Texas Ranger sometime in his later life.  It was sometime in 1870 that I served as a Texas Ranger.  See the following history taken from the World Book.   Texas Rangers are special police officers of the state of Texas.  They serve under the authority of the State Dept of Public Safety.  One noted Ranger summarized their qualities in these words: "The Texas Rangers can ride like a Mexican, trail like an Indian, shoot like a Tennessean, and fight like a very devil."   The Rangers have a tradition of individulism, resourcefulness, self-reliance, and politeness.
They often get their man with quick thinking rather than by force.  The Rangers wear no official uniforms.  They furnish their own clothing.  The state provides weapons and transportation.  But members of the Rangers may carry their own weapons, and they ride their own horses.
!Early Days:  The rangers were originally a band of mounted riflemen.  Early in the 1800's, Stephen F. Austin formed bands of rangers to protect American settlers along the Brazos River from Indian warriors and Mexican bandits.  The Texas general council in 1835 formally organized the Rangers and assigned them the sole task of defending the frontier against Indians.
After Texas joined the Union in 1845h, the Rangers continued to play a major role in frontier defense.  During the Mexican War (1846-1848), they performed valuable service as scouts and guerrilla fighters with the American armies in Mexico.  When the federal government established forts along the Texas frontier and garrisoned them with regular troops, Texans still placed their faith in the Rangers.  Sam Houston once remarked in the United States Senate: "Give us 1,000 Rangers, and will be responsible for the defense of our frontier...We ask no regular troops; withdraw them if you please.  I ask this not through any unkindness to them, but because they have not the effciency for frontier service."
!Later History Texas Rangers:  During the Reconstruction period that followed the Civil War, Texas suffered from lawlessness, murder, and Indian raids.  In 1874, 450 Texas Rangers received commissions as peace officers.  They continued to fight the Comanche along the northern border andd Mexican cattle thieves along the Rio Grande.  They also tracked down murderers, smugglers, Bank and Train robbers, and mine bandits.  Within 10 years they restored peace and quiet to the interior of Texas."

2Own Story and World Book Chisholm Trail.. "Chisholm Trail:In about 1868 I  was a rancher and a cowboy. I made many trips driving cattle from Texas to Abilione, Kansas, over the Chisholm Trail.   I was a Texas Ranger in later years.  The Chisholm Trail was a famous route that Texas cattlemen used in driving their herds northward to the railroads in Kansas.  In 1866, Jesse Chisholm, a half-breed Cherokee Indian trader, drove a wagon through Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) to his trading post near Wichita, Kans.
Cattle drivers who followed his wagon ruts to Abilene, Kans., gave the trail his name.  It extended to the Mexican Border.
The Chisholm Trail and its users are celebrated in frontier lore and cowboy songs.  Cattlemen began a series of long drives in 1868, and moved one and a half million cattle over the trail in three years.  They liked the route because it had no settlements, hills, or wooded areas.  As the railroads moved father west across the plains, settlers soon followed, and the route of the cattle trail shifed westward.  Ellsworth, 60 miles west of Abilene on the Kansas Pacific Railroad, and later Newton, farther south on the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad, became terminal points for cattle drives between 1872 and 1875.  The streets of these cow towns at the end of the trail were lined with saloons and gambling halls where cowboys spent their pay.  The long cattle drives ended and the trail fell into disuse as the railroads pushed across the plains and the farmers built fences on their homesteads."
