Emigrated to Utah 30 Nov 1856. Listed as farmer on family group sheet (four generation program). In book of Utah Pioneers it stated he fought in the Utah Indian War. The book is no longer in print. Jo Ann Isaac Ball, great-granddaughter found the book in the hands of an indivinual who had obtained it from a grandfather. His name came from the Prophet Joseph Sm/th because his parents were early converts to the Church in England. He had a second wife, Sophronia Austin, while his first wife was still living.
Joseph Smith Wignail came across the plains with the Martin Handcart Company

and Ann W. Hafen, page 302. His family left Liverpool on the ship Horizon
which was chartered by the LDS Church. Captain FAward Martin was over this
group. They landed in Boston, then overland by train to Iowa where they became outfitted with handcarts. They left 9 July 1856 which was too late for the year. They were overcome by snow and many perished but this entire family survived. They were met and rescued by Joseph S. Young and another brother at Greese Wood Springs, just before Devils Gate, which is a slot in the rock where the Sweetwater River goes through in Wyoming near Martins Cove. They entered the Salt Lake Valley on 30 November 1856, at noon.".
