Peter PETRIE

1letter to Mary Lou Murray by Mary Grider Davis, Wife of Samual Davis, of Richmond, Kentucky.. "he following infromation was taken from a letter to Mary Lou Murray by Mary Grider Davis, Wife of Samual Davis, of Richmond, Kentucky several years ago.
Concerning Peter Petree or Petrie, came to this country from Scotland as a young boy.  There are conflicting stories surrounding his arrival.  The version which tradition has handed through the generations is that he arrived in Charleston, SC, at seven years of age.  Born of Scotch-Presbyterian parents, he attended school taught by a Presbyterian minister who was a strict disciplinarian.  For some unknown reason, Peter was punished by his teacher--he then sought sympathy from his mother who evidently felt the punishment was deserved.  She also punished him and sent him back to school.  Feeling mistreated, he booked passage on a ship at a shipping port near his home.  He never had any contact with his family again.  According to the Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to USA, compilied and edited by Donald Whyte, there was a Peter Petree, age 10, from the Orkney Isles who boarded the Marlborough at Kirkwall in September, 1774, and arrived in  Savannah, Georgia, as an indentured farm servant.  Peter spent his early years in South Carolina.  His pension papers state that he lived in Greenville County, North Carolina, before enlisting in the Continental Army.  At the approximate age of 15-18 in 1782, he enlisted in the Continental Army under Camptain More, and Lieutenant Sanders.  During his eighteen-month army duty, he was not engaged in any important battles of the Revolutionary War.  It is known that he participated in a skirmish on the Ediste below Orangeburg and that he marched from Hilisborough, North Carolina, to Salisbury, NC, Guilford County, then to Four Holes and James Island, three miles from Charleston, where he was stationed..  At the approximate age of 68, he applied for an army pension and received an annual benefit of $40.".
