After an Illness of more than two years. Captain Walter Saunders, one of Frederick’s venerable and most highly respected citizens, died last night at 9:30 o’clock at his home on North Market street. Had he lived until May 18, he would have been 83 years of age:
Two years ago December 2 last; Capt. Sunders suffered a stroke of paralysis. He recovered sufficiently to be about the house and also on the street, but gradually grew worse from the infirmities due to his age, and was obliged to take to his bed on Easter Sunday. He lingered until last night when the end came quietly and peacefully. Although his illness lasted for more than two years. Captain Saunders suffered no pain. He was the son of the late Walter and Elizabeth troop Saunders, both of whom were born in England. He was born at Libertytown, this county, on May 18, 1829. While he was still an infant, his parents removed to Woodsboro, where his father was engaged in school teaching.
He is survived by his widow, who was Miss Caroline E. Marble of Mt. Vernon, Ohio. Besides his widow, three children survive him: Mrs. John Sponseller, of Jamesville; Miss Sophia Saunders, at home, and Mr. Walter Warren Saunders, physical director of the Y.M.C.A. this city. He leaves also one brother, Mr. John Saunders of Freeport, Nebraska.
The funeral arrangements have not been completed. Thomas P. Rice has charge of the funeral.

Obituary: The funeral of the late Captain Walter Saunders took place on Saturday at 3 o'clock from his home 411 North Market St. Rev. Douglas Hooff and Rev. Henri L. G. Kieller conducted the services which was largely attended. Reynolds Post, G.A.R. and Chippewa Tribe No. 19 I.O.R.M. attended and held services at the grave. Members of the Independent Hose Co. also attended. The casket was draped with a large silk flag of the Independent Rifle Co. of which Capt. Saunders had commanded during the Civil War. Beautiful floral emblems were presented by the Red Men, Hose Company, the G.A.R. and relatives and friends. Interment was made in Mt. Olivet."
