3Springfield Monitor Newspaper 1976. " Taken from the Springfield Monitor.  Heading " Iowans under scrutiney in Smith stabbing death" 1976.
Notes for John(Jackie)Smith: Source.    Investigation continues in the stabbing death of John Smith of Springfield September 7, 1976.  The Sarpy Sheriffs office submitted samples of blood smears found on the wall beside Smith's bed to the state crime lab.
There is still a lot of digging to do, according to Sheriff Pat Thomas. Lab reports were not available Wednesday.
The sheriff said several persons have taken polygraph examinations and more are scheduled in connection with the investigation, including two escapees from a Council Bluffs half-way house.
The escapees, now in custody in Iowa, are accused of holding a guard at knife-point in their escape, Thomas reported.  A car believed to have been used in the escape, was found in Rangley, Colo., and authorities speculate the pair traveled through Nebraska.
Smith's body was found in his bedroom about 1:20 p.m. Local residents went to his home when he failed to appear at the nutrition program site in Springfield Tuesday noon.  An autopsy was ordered.  The 78 year old died of approximately 25 stab wounds, authorities reported.  A bedroom window was open with the screen removed.  Officials speculate that Smith; who whould have been 79 Sept. 21 may have been stabbed on Labor Day.
Burglary may have been the crime motive.  Smith's wallet was the only item missing.  He received a Social Security check Friday, but authorities believe there was less than $10 in the wallet.  The check had been deposited in the bank.
A scuba diving team searched a nearby lake for the murder weapon.  A tracking dog was brought in to scour the area, but nothing turned up.  A report of two Saunders County vehicles in the vicinity Labor Day also led to a dead end.  The drivers of the two vehicles told officials they were fishing.

!     "Victim's Home Pictured is John Smith's home approximately two miles south of Springfield and 3/4 mile east of Highway 50 near Villa Springs.  The screen was removed from a rear window, arrow, where the murderer is believed to have gained entry into the house.  Smith's car is also pictured.

!   This article was sent to me from Deanna Kleider of Springfield.  She states that in the year of 1982 the murder remains unsolved.  John Smith was the son of Nora Wilson Smith and Frank Smith.  The grandson of Margaret Armstrong (Wilson) Palmer.".
