2Obituary for Merle D.Schaal son of William Daniel Schaal, Springfield Monitor, Springfield, Nebraska, January 15, 1914 . "Vol II, page 135, Springfield Cemetery Location Name Birth Death Notes 061 02 0 Schaal, Merle D 1888 1914 Springfield Monitor, Springfield, Nebraska, January 15, 1914 Merle Schaal Fatally Burned in Explosion Merle Schaal, formerly of this place and a son of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Schaal, received burns that will probably result in his death by the explosion of the gasoline tank of a corn sheller at a farm in Cass county. The accident occurred Tuesday morning. The young man's parents went to the scene of the accident, about seven miles east of Louisville, immediately after receiving word of their son's injuries. A telephone message to J. P. Schaal late yesterday conveyed the information that he was very low. Young Schaal has been living near Mynard, in Cass county, about two years. He is married and has two children. The following dispatch from Plattsmouth gives some of the details in regard to the accident: Plattsmouth, Neb, January 13--At the farm of George Meisinger, seven miles west of this city while the owners were endeavoring to warm a tank of gasoline so the engine would work for the corn sheller, the tank exploded and four men here badly burned, two seriously. When the explosion occurred a number of men were standing near and burning gasoline was thrown over them by the explosion which set fire to their clothing and before they could tear the clothing away the damage was done. W. A. Fight was least injured and many of the burns which he received were due to helping his comrades tear their clothing off. Nelle Land, while seriously burned, is not considered dangerous, but the burns of Murial Shaw and Everett Cahill are so bad that their lives are considered in danger and the former is not expected to recover. Dr. T. P. Livingston of this city was immediately summoned and did all he could to alleviate the suffering of the injured men. Latest reports up to noon today from the young man were to the effect that he could not live through the day. Note: Cass county newspaper referenced in obit is the Plattsmouth Journal. Springfield Monitor, Springfield, Nebraska, January 22, 1914 Funeral of Merle Schaal Held in Springfield, Sunday Merle Schaal, one of the victims of a gasoline explosion accident in Cass county last week, died Thursday afternoon at the farm house where he was injured. The body was brought to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Schaal, southwest of town and funeral services were held at the Springfield M. E. church Sunday noon. Burial was made in Springfield cemetery, after a short discourse by Rev. Fagan. Merle Schaal was born March 9, 1888, and was married to Miss Grace Carey November 3, 1909. Practically his entire life was spent in Sarpy county. He was a young man of many good qualities and enjoyed the friendship and respect of numerous acquaintances in this locality. About a year ago he moved to Cass county where he was living at the time of the accident which caused his death. He leaves a wife and one child, besides his parents and other relatives. The circumstances leading to his death are now too well known to require repetition. He suffered for two days after being so badly burned that it was known immediately his recovery was impossible. During his conscious hours he talked calmly with his near relatives while realizing that his demise was inevitable. It has been reported several times that one other injured man had died, but we have not learned whether such is the case. The first report was incorrect. The stricken wife and relatives are called upon to bear an unusually heavy burden of grief through the tragic death of their loved one. Words of consolation cannot avail to brighten their outlook upon life at the present moment, but the sincere sympathy of every friend is with them in their sorrow. ."
