A Marion county Coroner's jury returned in verdict of accidental death in the flash fire which destroyed a tinder box home at 910 bridge street at 6:59 AM Sunday and took the lives of a father and three children.  The mother and a daughter narrowly escaped the fire.
The blaze, which raced through the river front house, snuffing out the lives of four of its occupants started when a 13 year old boy poured gasoline into the stove to start an early morning fire.
Killed in the inferno were Thomas Woodrow Armstrong, 30, who died while trying to save the sleeping children. Barbara Ann Armstrong, 3, Thomas Woodrow Armstrong Jr., 2 and Pearl Armstrong, 11 months.
The mother Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Armstrong, 25 a daughter, Norma Jean Armstrong, 5 and Mrs. Armstrong's brother, Sterling Owens, 13, who were in the river front house when a gasoline can in the hands of Sterling touched off the blaze, escaped.
Mrs. Armstrong's hair was singed in the quick escape, and Norma Jean suffered burns and was taken to Levering hospital.  Her condition was described as good by hospital officials.
The jury ruled that the four victims met death by being trapped in a burning building by the starting of a fire with gasoline by a 13 year old boy, causing the accidental death to four persons.
A story of heroism in the early morning fire unfolded itself from Harry Armstrong, brother of the victim who gave his life in the vain attempt to save the lives of his children.
"I’m going to get my babies or die with them." Woodrow shouted to his brother as he kicked in a bedroom window in the blazing house.
Harry said he tried to persuade Woodrow from entering the pyre but he wouldn't listen.  The place was a mass of fire.  Harry said you could see that it was impossible to go in there.
The inquest was conducted by Marion County Coroner W. Crawford Smith.  The inquest was held at the Smith funeral home.  The remains of the father and his children were removed from the scene by members of the staff of the Schwartz Funeral home.  Funeral services will be held at the Schwartz Funeral home at 2 p.m. today with Rev. J. W. Golden officiating, and burial will be at the Grandview Burial Park.  Woodrow Armstrong was an employee of the Hehmeyer Coal company."."
