!     Mayberry Thomas Colvin  moved with his wife, Caroline Crosby and two childrn to Louisiana with the first group in 1853 coming from South Carolina. The two boys were Richard Crosby, age 3 years and Garland Hardwick, age 18 months.  They brought with them four slaves; Wade, Callie, Mary Ann and Harriett, age nine.  On the trip Harriett frequently got out of the carriage and carried the baby, my father, to let him rest.
!     The company reached Old Vienna on Dec. 24, 1853.  Grandfather lived in a small house near Cypress Creek, afterwards building a nine two story ouse on the old Trenton Homer Road, about two miles below Unionville.  They reared a family of twelve children, as shown by the record.
!     Grandfather was for ten years a teacher and taught grandmother before their marriage.  She was not more than 16 when they were married.  She was a wonderful woman in many ways, always trying to help in sickness and distress, was very energetic and high minded.  Grandmother was born Nov. 9, 1833, the night the stars fell.
!     Grandfather was a very mild or quiet man, also extraordinarily peaceful, as shown by the following expression.  I heard him say, "I never struck a man and never was struck, never sued a man and never was sued, never a witness in court".  He was a staunch believer in honor and justice, and endeavored to hold up these principles.  He was a generous man, a good neighbor and loved all.

!     He served in the Confederate Army.  He died in June 1895.
