James Sr. ANGEL

1Written By: Shirley Evans and Lucy Gay, Angel History, Book. "ANGEL HISTORY
FALLEN LEAVES

"After reading Jess Wilson's When They Hanged The Fiddler, and talking to several people, we set out to Frankfort, Kentucky to see what treasures the Archives might hold on this family.

After extensive research, we found that Emphrain Absolem and Elijah Angel were the sons of James Angel, not his brothers as Mr. Wilson suggested.

James Angel born ca 1763 came to Kentucky with his sons around 1820.  Family tradition says James Angel, a blacksmith, got in a fight and killed a man with his fists and for this reason he and his sons left North Carolina and walked to Kentucky carrying an anvil.

James Angel, Jr. must have come with his father also, since his record states he was born in 1807 in North Carolina. The story does not mention a wife but there is a daughter, Elizabeth, shown in Breathitt County 1850 census as being fifty two years old, born ca 1798.

James Angel, Sr. believed to be born in England ca 1763, shows up on the 1830 Clay County, Kentucky census, as being between the age of sixty and seventy years old. His wife also was listed as being between fifty and sixty years old.  This census confirms that James was born ca 1763.

Records show that James Angel, Sr. had five children.

1. Ephriam , born 1799, Bumcombe County, North Carolina, married Susannah Ingram.
2. Absolom, born ca 1800 in North Carolina, married Marthena _______
3. Elijah, born ca 1803 in North Carolina, married Elizabeth Bowman.
4. Elizabeth, born 1798 in North Carolina, married Isham Barrett.
5. James, Jr. born ca 1807 married Elizabeth Cunningham.

James Angel, Sr. died sometime after 1850, probably in Breathitt County1 Kentucky since the 1850 census shows

Isham Barrett1 Jr. age 22
Eliza, age 17
Madison Johnston age 16
Elizabeth Burn age 15
Nancy Fox, age 16
Fannie Sturgon, age 30 born in North Carolina
James Angel, age 87

Since James was living with his grandson and is shown as being eighty seven years old then, we can assume that James died sometime in the early 1850's.  Breathitt County 1860 census does not show James.

The history of James Angel, Sr.'s children is listed as I found the information.

1. Elizabeth Angel, born ca 1798, the daughter of James Angel married Isham Barrett, they are shown on the Breathitt County 1850 census.

Isham Barrett, age 60, born in Virginia ca 1790

Elizabeth, age 52 born in Alabama

George W. Hounbhell, age 22 born in Virginia. Also shown is Isham Barrett, Jr. living next door.  This is the only child we are sure Elizabeth had.

We did not find Elizabeth or Isham listed in 1860, we do not have any futher information  on  them.

2. Ephriam Angel, born ca 1799 in Buncombe county, North Carolina, the son of James Angel, Sr. came to Kentucky around 1820 with his father.

Ephriam married twice, we believe his first marriage was in Clay County, we do not know who his first wife was, but we found the following information, given.by James Angel of Manchester, Kentucky, dated April 9, 1898:

James is quoted as saying, " I was born in Breathitt County, Kentucky in 1827.  My father Ephriam Angel was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina about 1800, he came to Kentucky about 1820 and settled on the middle fork where I was born.  His father James came with him.  Besides my father he had children as follows,  Absolom, Elijah, James and Betsey Barrett.  Elijah and his family went to Missouri.

James and Absolom lived and died in this secton of the state. James, he died only a year or two ago  on Laurel Fork in Jackson County, Kentucky.

My people are of English  extraction I do not know where they came from.  My grandfather enlisted in the army near the close of the Revolution.  He was eighteen years old, but he was in no battle because peace was declared soon after her enlisted.  I remember him well.  His father was  born in England."

This great piece of information was found in the Owsley County library. (We recorded it as it was found. Bad grammer and  all.

This James Angel was Ephriam's son from his first marriage We do not know what happened to Ephriam's first wife, or if there were any more children from this marriage.

Ephriam's second marriage was ca 1837 to Susannah Ingram, born in Madison County, Kentucky.  They had ten children.
a. Viney, born 1838
b. ANDREW, born 1841, married Malvery Gross, born
1847.  The daughter of Henry Gross, born 1824 and Levisa
Jones, born 1827.  Henry and Levisa were married in Breathitt
County, Kentucky in 1846.
ANDREW ANGEL, was Lucy Gay's great grandfather.  We are fortunate that we have a complete history on him.
Andy was the oldest son of Ephriam and Susanna Angel, born 1841 in Breathitt County, Kentucky.  He was a Confederate soldier in the Civil War.    Records in the Lee County Library show the following information.  Andy enlisted as a private in the fifth regiment.  He enlisted July 20, 1862 and was taken prisoner, and held at Fort Delaware from July 1862 until June 1865.
Soon after he was released from prison, Andy returned to Breathitt County, Kentucky and married Malvery Gross. I believe they married around 1866 since their first son James was born 1867 in Breathitt County, Kentucky.
Lee County Kentucky 1870 census show:
Andrew Angel, age 31
Malvery, age 20
James, age 1
Living next door to Andy we find his father, Ephriam age sixty eight, and Susannah age fifty three.
Juhaus, age 17
Margaret, age 15
Zarilda, age 12
Jane, age 8
Ephriam Jr., age 5

I do not believe Andy ever moved from Breathitt
County, I believe the forming of Lee County in 1870 simpley
placed Andy and Malvery in Lee County, because records in

Lee County shows that Andy had settled under the Home Stead

Act, near St. Helens on what is now known as Dunagin Branch.

Andy and Malvery had three children
1. James, born 1867
2. Elvoria, born  1867 in Lee County.
3. Robert, born 1873 in Lee County

Andy and Malvery's marriage was short and full of tragedy. In March 1878 when he was only eleven years old, James their eldest son was killed by a neighbor's horse.  only four months later on Aug. 1, 1878 Malvery died, her death record states she died from a cold, but I have been told many times by my Aunts that she died from a broken heart.  She could not live with the loss of her young son.

The death of Malvery left Andy with two small children, Elvoria, age six and Robert age four.

Lee County 1880 census show:

Andy Angel, age 38 a widower
Elvoria, age 8
Robert, age 6

Andy married the second time ca 1881 to Catherine Taylor.  They had two children.

1. Martha, born Feb. 18, 1882
2. Grover, born 1884

Once again tragedy struck the family of Andy Angel. Grover the nine year old son of Andy and Catherine, was killed while playing cowboy and Indian  with a young friend. The children had found a real gun, which belonged to the friends' family, and were playing with it.  Grover was shot through the throat and died twenty two days later.
I have been told that Grover was buried in the Turner Graveyard, near the Lee and Owsley Line on the South Fork Road.  Andy and Catherine are buried there also.  Their graves are unmarked.
Elvoria Angel, born 1871 in Lee County, Kentucky the daughter of Andy and Malvery Angel had five children.

Elvoria Angel, age 39
Lucy, age 14
Leonard, age 12
Nettie, age 10
Clyde, age 8
Martha, age 4

After Uncle Lem died, Martha married Cannis Lynch, known a "Can".  They had one child, Geneva.
There is a story about Cannis Lynch.  I was told that one  morning Uncle Can left home going to work on South Fork.  He was never seen again.  His family and neighbors searched for him but never found a trace.
Years later when the Southfork Road was being built, the work crew removed a cliff that had fallen in and found the skeleton of a man.  This was believed to be Cannis Lynch.

J. William Joseph Angel, born 1847 the son of Ephriam and Susannah Angel, married Margaret Dameral, March 9, 1871 in Lee County, Kentucky.

Lee County, Kentucky 1880 census show:

Ephriam Angel age 81
Susanna, wife age 58
Margaret, daughter age 25
Jane, daughter age 18
Ephriam Jr. son age 16

Lee County 1870 census shows Ephriam as age sixty eight and Susannah age fifty three.  As you can see, you can not always  go by the census to determine ages, but according to  Ephriams birth date he would have been eighty one in 1880.

We never found Ephriam or Susannah after 1880.  As you know we had no way of checking 1890, but it is our belief that both Ephriam and Susannah died shortly after 1880.

ABSOLOM ANGEL, born ca 1800 in Bucncombe County, North Carolina, the son of James Angel, Sr. born ca 1763 in England. Absolom married Marthena _______

According to James Angel, Absolom's nephew, Absolom came to Kentucky with his father ca 1820 and lived in the area (Clay or Breathitt) until he died.  According to the birth of his children he lived in Clay and Perry Counties, and maybe in Breathitt County, Kentucky.

Breathitt County Kentucky census for 1850 shows:

Narthena Angel, age 50 born in N.C. RUBEN, age 16, born 1834 in Clay County,
Kentucky.
Levi, age 15, born 1835 in Perry County. Van Buren, age 6, born 1844.

This is knownto be Absolom's wife and children, so Absolom must have died somewhere between 1844 and 1850.

RUBEN ANGEL, born 1834 in Clay County, Kentucky, married KATHERINE ItKITSY1I COUCH, born 1831 in Virginia.  The daughter of Elijah and Serena Couch, Katherine is shown on the Breathitt County, Kentucky census in 1850.

Elijah Couch age 40  born in N.C.
Serena, age 44
KATHERINE, age 19
Patsy, age 17
Rose Ann, age 15
Ann, age 11
Sally, age 7
Levisa, age 5
Serena, age 2

Breathitt County, Kentucky 1860 shows:

RUBIN ANGEL, age 28

CATHERINE, age 25

Martha, age 6
Sarah E. age 4
Lucinda, age 2
Not shown on this census is another son, JOHN WESLEY ANGEL, born March 13, 1861,

Other sources of  information on this family were found in Frankfort, Kentucky, listed in old Breathitt County, Kentucky birth records. Lucinda Angel, born Nov. 19. 1857. Parents are listed as REUBIN ANGEL & KATHERINE COUCH. *Lucinda Angel is Wayne Ambergy's grandmother.

Sarah Elizabeth Angel, born in Breathitt County, Kentucky, June 16, 1856, parents are listed as, REUBIN ANGEL & KATHERINE COUCH

I believe REUBIN AND KATHERINE were married in Breathitt County, Kentucky ca. 1853.  This marriage was short and very sad.

Shortly after their youngest child, JOHN WESLEY was born in 1861, the Civil War (1861-1865) started.  Although Kentucky was a neutral state, there were volunteers from Kentucky who fought for both sides.  Also there was a group who used the war as an excuse to kill and pillage anyone they came accross.  They were refered to as guerilla soldiers.

Tradition says, Katherine was down sick in bed and Reubin went to get a doctor for her.   While he was gone he ran into a group of guerillas and after they forced him to climb a tree, they shot and killed him. After Reubin did  not return with a doctor, Katherine died and left four young children.  The children were split up.

I do not know who raised Martha and Sarah Elizabeth. Wayne Amburgy told me a Hearld family raised Lucinda.  He was not sure of Mr. Hearld's first name, but he thought it was Hark.  Lucinda was Mr. Amburgy's grandmother.

The 1870 Lee County, Kentucky census show JOHN WESLEY ANGEL, eight years old living in the Pealy Penington household along with two other children, Hiram Ketchem age nine and Margaret Ketchem eleven years old.

I have been told that the Peningtons were no kin to any  of these children, but they took them in and raised
them.  As you read later, John Wesley Angel named one of his children Pealy and another one Hiram, this leads me to believe that he cared very much for his foster father and brother.

A marriage license found in the Lee County court house shows  JOHN WESLEY ANGEL, age twenty, first marriage, a farmer living in Jackson County was born in Breathitt County, Kentucky, was married Jan. 17, 1882 in Lee County, Kentucky, to Mary Mayse age twnety one, first marriage, born in Estil County, Kentucky.  They were married at the home of Anderson Mayse in the presence of Isam Mayse and James Tincher. Edward Angel and Annie Keller Angel raised their family on Lerose in Owsley County, Kentucky.

EDWARD, was a great man of God, He and Elisha (Popie) Mason, organized and established the  Lerose Penicostal Church.  There is still church there today.

One story my husband, Bill told me was about his grand-father, Edd.  He says his most vivid memory of his grandpa Angel is how he would pray. He told me when his older brother, Lee was in the Korea War (1848-1952) and their mother, Fannie was very worried about his safty, she went to her father, Edd and ask him to pray for Lee to come home safe.  After praying Grandp told her not to worry.  "God has told me no more of your children or grandchildren will ever fight on foreign soil."

Lee came home safe and none of Fannie's other eight sons ever had to go to the army.  As of today only one of her  many grandsons have ever served.  Ronnie Hearld, Lillian's son was drafted during  the Vietnam War, but he was sent to Germany, where he served his time driving a truck.  Grandpa's prophcy has held true for the last forty years.

In 1957 my husband, Bill suffered a very bad case of pneumonia.  This left his lungs very weak and scarred. He spent six months in the hospital.  One spot on his lung was  not healing and the doctors feared tuberculosia.  There was talk of having to remove his lung, but Grandpa Edd had other ideas.  He took this problem to the Lord.  After praying Grandpa told them not to worry, there would be no surgey.
Sure enough, thirty five years later, Bill is fine and has both of his lungs!

Edward Angel died March 29, 1967 at the age  of eighty three.  He is buried in the Lerose Cemetery in Owsley County, Kentucky.

Grandma Annie Angel lived on by herself at Lerose for several years.  When you went to see her she was always very pleased. She loved to sit in her rocking chair and rock her great grandchildren.

Grandma moved to Middletown, Ohio, with her daughter, Jalah Mason.  She lived with her until her death June 10,1980. She was brought back to Kentucky and laid to rest beside her  husband, Edward.

In her last days Grandma Annie was very sick and confused as to where she was and who everyone was.  Her mind went back to days gone by, when her grandchildren was little.

Her grandson, William Earl, (Bill) was sick alot when he was little and Grandma helped take care of him.  Before she died she worried about him so much that Sue Evans, her granddaughter inlaw made her a rag doll.  Grandma named it  William Earl.

Grandma kept her doll with her even in the hospital.

She rocked and cared for her doll and talked to William

Earl.  When she died Aunt Jalah ask Bill what he wanted

to do with the doll.  He ask that it be buried with her.

It was.

I'm sure in my, heart that if God lets us do what we enjoy the most when we go to Heaven, Grandma must have a big old rocking chair and be in charge of the precious babies there."
End."
