3Emmigration of Gottlieb Kueltzo Family. "Second Addendum to “ Early Kueltzos in America “
March, 2009
This addendum answers the questions of how and when the first Kueltzos immigrated to the US from Mecklenburg ( Germany ). Thanks to diligent efforts of Marilyn Rampage and Vivienne Carlson I now have the immigration and ship passenger manifest (Attachment A) showing the Kueltzo family sailed from the port of Hamburg to New York August 25 ,1857 on the ship Bark John Hermann. They traveled as a family of 8 in steerage class ( between decks ). The family name was recorded as Kutzow    (umlaut over the u which would make it ue in English). The members and their ages are listed as:

Gottfried (father)--- 44years
Sophie (mother) ---- 39
Dorothea  ------------- 18
Wilhelmine ( Wilhelm )-16
Johannes (John)----- 12
Christian -------------- 14
Rudolph  --------------  9
Sophie ----------------- 6

I have also included in Attachment A the passenger records from the Immigrant Ship Transcribers Guild for the Bark John Hermann. Comparison of the original manifest with the “ transcribed “ names shows the inconsistency in recording the names of immigrants.

This must have been a very difficult time for the Kueltzo family. The economic and political conditions in Mecklenburg in the 1800 s were intolerable and revolution against the noble landowners was being threatened. Attachment B provides a brief history of Mecklenburg and Pommerania. Travel overland to the port city of Hamburg  from Mecklenburg, followed by a number of days at sea would have bee quite an ordeal for this large family. Even after arrival in Illinois it must been hard for the family. Remember 1857 was the time of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. They had to learn a new language and a new political system as well as contend with the disruptions  and controversy of civil war and slavery.

As indicated in the First Addendum, the 1860 US Census shows Gottlieb Kueltzo ( 45 years old ) living in Chicago with his wife Sophia ( 40 ) and 5 children ---- John (17), William (15), Christian (13) , Rudolph (11) and Sophia (9). Dorothea ( now about 21 years old ) is not listed with the family, which suggests she either left home or married before the census was taken.

Although we now know how and when the Kueltzo family arrived in America we still do not know specifically where in Mecklenburg they and their ancestors lived, and whether they had relatives who chose to remain there.

Information from the International Genealogical Index/ Germany lists Friedrich Christoph Kueltzow being born in 1781 in Zeitlow, Pommerania ( now Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). At age 39 he married Frederica Maria Teschendorf in 1820 in Zeitlow-Loik(?). At least 2 other Kueltzows are listed at this location --- Johanna Dorthea (born 1815) and Johann Friedrich Christian (born 1813). It is not known whether these 2 were illegitimate (not uncommon in those days), or perhaps children of another marriage. Since Gottlieb Kueltzo was born 1814-1818,I can’t help but wonder if he and his family lived in the Zeitlow area. Perhaps coincidentally, Zeitlow is just a little northeast of Demmin, the region from which my Herrmann ancestors emigrated. See map in Attachment C.
